The
main reason people
(individuals and
fleet managers)
choose electric
vehicles is to be
environmentally
sensitive (no use
of gasoline or diesel
fuel, no pollution
from the vehicles,
etc.)
However,
there is a second
VERY STRONG reason
for electric vehicles
... The significant
savings in fuel
and operating costs.
Below
are two links. One
is to the ZENN web
site and its useful
Savings Calculator.
This one only calculated
the money saved
on fuel. As you
use it, you will
need to know that
the average cost
per kilowatt of
electricity in Colorado
is $.0965 per kilowatt
hour. Your rate
may vary.
The
second link is to
the MILES web site
and its more detailed
Savings Calculator.
This one takes into
consideration operational
costs NOT experienced
with an electric
vehicle (like oil
changes and periodic
tune-ups of internal
combustion engines)...
and the fractional
cost of electric
vehicle batteries.
Another
major area of electric
vehicle SAVINGS
is reduced mechanical
repair costs. Unfortunately,
this is something
very hard to quantify.
But, you know you
can gain GREAT savings
here too. An electric
vehicle has just
a small number of
mechanical parts
compared to an internal-combustion
vehicle (no radiator,
oil filter, oil
lines, oil pan,
emissions equipment
[no emissions testing
either], no spark
plugs, no muffler,
no tailpipe, and
none of the hundreds
of parts in that
internal-combustion
engine).
