Our Electric Vehicle Inventory
SmartWheels currently offers several kinds of Neighborhood
Electric Vehicles (along with a selection of used cars and trucks).
The Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) is a special Federally-approved
classification of street-legal vehicles. They are also known as
LSV or Low-Speed Vehicles.
This classification came into existence in 1998 under
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 500 (FMVSS 500). NEV's can
legally travel on streets and roads with a speed limit of 35 mph
or less.
When they are to be used on-road, they must be licensed,
and the driver must be licensed. Because airbags are not required,
the NEV cannot travel on highways or freeways.
